Introduction
Itchy Foot is Hallberg Rassy 39 Mk II. Built in 1997 at the yard on Elllös, Sweden where 209 were built between 1991 until 2003. She is hull 111. She is around 40ft (12m) long, weighs about 10,000kg (10 tons) and draws 1.85m (6ft) in the water. She carries 450 litres of water and 380 litres of fuel for the 54HP diesel engine.
She is a beautiful and well built blue-water cruiser, perfect for either roaming around the world or relaxing on anchor near her home port. Her sails are in good condition and engine runs reliably and her beautiful teak decks have many years of use left in them. Her interior is immaculate, with almost flawless joinery and comfortable soft furnishings. She sails comfortably, quickly and and is easy to handle alone or as a couple.
Below is a quote from Cruising World magazine, USA, November 1995 issue about the Hallberg-Rassy 39 :
“…this yacht has the proper makings of an offshore cruising yacht. Below, the mahogany interior is flawlessly joined and meticulously finished, a hallmark of Hallberg-Rassyyachts… Not readily visible are the telltale signs of Hallberg-Rassy’s above-average engineering and building methods, lurking unseen behind the fine joinery below. The builder’s reputation for excellence translates into good resale value…. My experience with Hallberg-Rassy has convinced me that sailboats can make beautiful, safe homes. She has spent most of her life on the water around the coasts of the UK and Belgium, only recently venturing into the tropics. Her previous owners conducted a fairly extensive refit in 2011 preparing her for their plans to sail around the Mediterranean and her major systems are in good condition. Since taking ownership in 2015 her current owners have meticulously maintained her to high standards, and an almost complete list of renovations can be found below.
But just as important as the facts and figures above is how she feels. She is comfortable, cozy, robust and surprisingly spacious. The aft cabin, with an insert to create one ‘king-size’ bed that measures 1.80m (6ft) by 2.5m (8ft) is perfect for a couple to sleep in space and comfort.
The main saloon is perfectly proportioned, it feels open and airy enough but has things to hold onto everywhere. Inward opening portholes provide good ventilation and aft facing hatches help keep out the rain. The large table in the saloon is a perfect place to relax and a large L-shaped sofa coupled with the sofa opposite will accommodate many for dinner. There is an excellently sized chart table which is a great space for computers, navigation and not surprisingly charts. The galley has stacks of storage space, a good stove / oven and a fridge with separate freezer.
Above decks, she has a cockpit in the ‘centre’ of the boat which helps give more shelter and comfort when needed. A hard, glass and fabric combination spray-hood provide good protection from the wind and weather. Everything can be handled from the cockpit by one or two people.
On anchor she is makes a great floating home. The 500W of solar panels provides all normal energy requirements, only requiring a ‘top-up’ from the generator and charger if the weather stays cloudy for more than a few days in a row. There is sufficient power to keep both fridge and separate freezer running, along with the usual demands from iPads, Computers and lighting.
Underway she comes alive, with excellent performance and a stable, sea-worthy platform. She is happiest on a broad reach and comfortably ticked off 150nm days crossing the Pacific sailing conservatively. Upwind she also makes great progress and points well, with her displacement keeping her moving steadily, any unexpected waves coming down the deck are reflected by the solid windscreen and spray-hood.

Designed by German Frers, the HR 39 is a great sailing, tough, go anywhere bluewater boat,
certified Category A for Unlimited Ocean. Hallberg-Rassy built 219 of the 39s, between 1991 and 2003 and Itchy Foot is hull number 111.
The Hallberg-Rassy 39 Mk II has two generous double cabins and large head, seagoing galley and a spacious salon. Itchy Foot has a comfortable and secure sit downnav station, with a full sized chart table that works well irrespective of the sea state. The salon is very open and comfortable and the L shaped galley works exceptionally well at sea or at anchor. There is an excellent amount of storage making the perfect base for extended voyages or simply enjoying the comforts of home on the hook.
Interior
The moment you step down below into Itchy Foot you see the quality and reputation of Hallberg-Rassy shine. The interior of Itchy Foot is both beautiful and hardwearing with its satin finished mahogany and white headliner. It it hard to believe the woodwork is twenty years old as in most places she looks like new. The teak and holly floors are in perfect condition, being covered with hard wearing blue carpet for most of their lives. The carpet is excellent at dampening sound and adding warmth and comfort to the interior. The grey upholstery on the berths and settees is comfortable and compliments the interior with its deep wood tones. The upholstery is in good condition considering the age of the boat and a testament to quality materials. Beige curtains on ports and hatches allow you to block out sun on in the tropics. The layout of the Hallberg-Rassy 39 is perfect for a couple or small family - rather than trying to squeeze in an extra cabin or extra head they wisely chose to design a roomy, comfortable and spacious boat.
One striking feature of the HR39 is the light and ventilation which are both excellent. She is bright, airy and a very comfortable place to relax and spend time, both in the heat of the day and the cool of the evening. The ports on the sides of the coachroof open to allow breeze and fresh air to easily circulate, they also allow light to enter the boat without too much direct sunlight overheating the spaces below. In total there are 10 opening ports and four large opening hatches, there are also several dorade vents to help move the air around naturally. Mostcabinetand locker doors are louvered, which also contributes to significant air movement. We have not suffered from mold or moisture even the middle of the humid topical summers of the Caribbean.
In cooler climates she is naturally at home, being made for life in Sweden she copes with the cold perfectly. Warmth can come from a Wabasto diesel heater and the hull from the waterline up and the deck are insulated with closed cell foam for protection against heat and cold.
In the evening she transforms into a cosy place to relax and read a book or watch a movie. Warm and natural LED lights overhead, reading lights, ambient light strips provide either a relaxing ambient light or more direct light for whatever tasks need to be done. Being LED they draw almost zero power and you don’t need to worry about leaving them on by accident.
Saloon
The main saloon is spacious and comfortable. The drop-leaf saloon table can comfortably seat six and when folded provides easy movement and space. The centre of the table doubles a a top opening drinks storage with bottle dividers to stop any rattling when underway.
The saloon is beautiful with its attractive satin finished mahogany woodwork, its white headliner accented with mahogany, and exquisite wooden floors. The salon has an “L” shaped dinette to port and a straight settee to starboard. The starboard settee is hinged at the top and lift to provide the perfect passage berth. The starboard settee has additional storage beneath which is perfect for food and other dried goods. The port side settee is hinged at the bottom and opens to reveal extensive storage space behind. Fuel and freshwater tanks are hidden beneath the port-side settee and under the cabin sole. Both settees provide very good passage berths and rather the trouble ourselves with lee cloths we simply switch sides on tacks.
There are cabinets to port and starboard, outboard of both settees, with the louvered door
lockers flanking the bookshelves on either side. We are constantly amazed by how much storage there is on this boat and it is a testament to Hallberg-Rassy’s bluewater pedigree.
Galley
The galley on Itchy Foot is a pleasure to use both on passage and at anchor. The wrap around design provides the perfect place to wedge yourself into and work in safety no matter the sea-state.
The gimballed oven has two burners with pot holders, a well sized oven and can be covered with a removable counter-top. There is a propane shut-off valve safely located under the oven and an additional solenoid located higher up (currently not in use).
The counter tops are white, marble effect, laminate. The galley is surrounded by sliding doored cabinets, louvered lockers and and several draws in total providing plenty of storage. The extra-deep double stainless steel sink is located on the aft counter with both manual and pressure water faucets. In addition there is a third faucet which draws through a 0.5 micron charcoal filter and provides fantastic tasting drinking water. The well insulated refrigerator box is on the outboard aft corner of the counter and the freezer box is located behind the nav table.
A well placed fan above the sink provides ventilation and airflow when cooking. For your safety and security there are two Vetus GD1000 gas sensors, open is positioned above the galley correctly located to detect lighter carbon monoxide and the second is located beneath the stove to detect heavier propane gas they are attache to an audible alarm also located in the galley.
Navigation Station
Opposite the galley to port of the companionway stairs is the well sized chart table with instruments, controls, and switches within easy reach. It provides a well protected space for navigation, communications and weather forecasting, or simply writing an email to friends. The top opening chart table is large with plenty of room to store & review charts. Instruments are mounted on the forward console. Aft of the table seat is located the freezer and above it the main fuse panel, along with it a battery monitor and other useful instruments. There is also space above the chart table to store books and small whiteboard to keep track of the more immediate lists and important notes.
Head
The head is both comfortable to use and easy to clean, with white surfaces and a porcelain sink. The sink nozzle can also be lifted up and used as a interior shower, with both hot and cold water on a mixer tap. Shower water is collected beneath a teak shower grate and quickly pumped over the side by a high output shower pump operated by a solenoid switch near the mirror. Ventilation is good with both an opening port and a side facing hatch.
The head has an incredible amount of storage space with cupboards beneath the sink, behind the toilet and above the side counters. The head even has roof for a large holding tank for use in marinas or protected areas.
Aft Cabin
One of the major benefits of a centre-cockpit design is a large and spacious aft cabin, you won’t find it’s equal on a similarly sized aft cockpit boat. There are three berths in the aft cabin, with a small double to starboard and a single to port. Between the two berths is a small seat, a dressing mirror and bedside table with fiddles. All around the aft cabin are seven copious lockers for storage, also there are two hanging lockers in the passageway between the saloon and aft-cabin.
In addition to the standard design, Itchy Foot has the benefit of turning the whole aft-cabin space into a oversized kingsized double bed. We have covered the excellent HR mattresses with a large double-bed topper and sleep very comfortably as a couple across the cabin.
The aft-cabin has excellent airflow, with a small fan, two opening ports and a large hatch we have no trouble keeping the cabin cool and pleasant for sleeping in almost all conditions.
Engine Room
Between the saloon and the aft-cabin is a companion-way with large, sound-proofed, double doors providing excellent access to a large engine room. The engine-rooms on Hallberg-Rassy’s are always oversized and well laid out, Itchy Foot is no exception. Most maintenance tasks are easily performed in the readily accessible engine room, oil filters, fuel filters, raw-water strainers, impellers and most seacocks are all very easily accessed. The whole room is protected by a halon replacement automatic fire extinguisher system (service recommend).
If you ever needed to replace the engine or the generator, both can be relatively easily removed by either unbolting the cockpit floor or through the access opening in the startboard side cockpit lazarette.
Cockpit
Hallberg-Rassy’s center cockpit provides excellent protection and comfort when sailing, in almost all conditions of the weather and sea. Itchy Foot has a strong, fixed glass windscreen and removable canvas spray-hood which together offer great sun and spray protection. The center window of the windscreen can be opened for a cool breeze. A canvas extension connects to the dodger for complete cockpit coverage when not sailing for keeping out sun, wind, and rain.
In the centre of the cockpit if an exquisite folding varnished teak table for dining and entertaining. It can be either fully open when on anchor or half open with fiddles when underway. The removable teak floor grate makes keeping the cockpit clean much easier and the large scuppers, washboards and optional storm washboard makes it very safe at sea.
To starboard under the teak-covered seating, is a huge lazarette, it not only provides additional access to the engine room and generator but is home to the portable water-maker. It also has mountains of storage space.
The helm is well placed and well sized, with all important controls close-at-hand. All winches, the mainsheet, the autopilot and bow-thruster and the engine controls are all right at the helm. Chart plotter and instruments are easily viewed under the protection of the dodger.
Deck
Itchy Foot is outfitted for blue water cruising with robust equipment of the highest caliber. The deck is well organized and uncluttered, she has clean lines and plenty of space to move around with strong accessible handholds when required.
Her decks are beautiful teak, with excellent anti-skid properties, while they are original they are still in good condition with no leaks. Most of the screw heads have been replaced and recovered and the caulking has been kept in good condition insuring the deck remains water tight. While some of the planks are warn in places the deck has many years of life left in her and still looks good.
As with all Hallberg-Rassy’s the deck hardware is oversized and well built for the challenges of offshore and ocean voyages. In addition to the basic equipment on the deck we added a solar arch and davits combined on the aft-deck. This provides Itchy Foot with an easy way to lift the tender with the engine for short hops, or for longer passages the same lifting mechanism can easily lift the engine off the dinghy and secure it on a dedicate outboard mounting. The tender then safely sits above the stern security beneath the arch. For longer, ocean passages we generally store the tender on the foredeck.
The arch also provides Itchy Foot with 500W of solar power, this is enough power to keep the batteries topped-up, the freezer running, the fridge cold and still charge laptops and other devices. On passage or on cloudy days, we simply use the generator to match the short-fall.
