DESCRIPTION AND WALK-THROUGH:

This Mikado 56  was carefully built the renowned CNSO Chantiers Naval Constructions Nautiques du Sud-Ouest (FRANCE) and designed by the illustrious Michel Bigoin, a French naval architect famous for designing luxury yachts such as superyachts XARGO, Attila, or the 75m Phocea. ‘Jean- Marie’ is an astonishing example of endurance, strength and seaworthiness in all latitudes and ocean conditions.

In spite of her 56', and technically one of the smallest yacht designed by Michel Bigoin, 'JEAN-MARIE' packs many of the superyacht features while remaining easy to handle for two people. Her interesting layout and maximizing use of her space makes her an ideal live-aboard or skippered charter vessel.

Her owners for the past 40 years, a charming Swiss couple, sailed her around the world, from France to Langkawi by way of South America, South Africa and the South Pacific, then following the Northern Route to Asia.Over the years, this remarkable ship was always kept in immaculate condition. ‘'Jean-Marie' can comfortably continue her odyssey with her new owners without anything needed to be spent.

Stepping on board this mighty ocean voyager, one is immediately impressed by her size and evident strength. From the heavy, incredibly thick hull, to the oversize rig and deck fittings, safe decks and intelligently fitted out steering station, it is obvious that 'Jean-Marie' is a yacht meant to explore the far reaches of the world.

The Mikado 56 has similar sea-faring qualities as the renowned Amel Supermaramu. It is  is designed around a centre-cockpit which is well protected from the elements and set up to be able to control every sail without having to venture on deck.

The salon is large comfortable in all weather and can accommodate a large family.

A good size nav station is to starboard, adjacent the main bathroom which is equipped with head and shower. On the port side is the cabin dedicated as a workshop, equipped with a large L-shape work bench complete with lathe and furnished with dedicated storage for the labelled and very well organised tools and spare parts.

Leading forward and adjacent the guest head area is a generously proportioned stateroom with a double berth, washbasin and huge amount of storage.

Forward again is another cabin with three good size single bunks.  As with the rest of the boat, the presentation and condition is a credit to the yacht's owners. From the timber floor to the teak trimmings and beautiful joinery, this yacht demonstrates in every aspect the love and care she has always been given. The boat is clean, dry, well lit and comfortable.

The good size galley offers plenty of food preparation areas, quality appliances and abundant storage.

Now for the piece de resistance: The master cabin is past the galley and occupies the whole mid to aft section of the yacht. It is absolutely huge and beautifully appointed, with a large double bed, huge amount of storage, flat screen TV / DVD, a bar area, salon with table and of course access to its own ensuite toilet and wash basin. It is a veritable little apartment in itself.

'Jean-Marie' is designed to be self-sufficient for extended length of time and can cater to both water and power demands for up to 8 people comfortably and as such makes an ideal blue water cruiser / world explorer. Complete with workshop, numerous tools and a huge quantity of spare parts, she is ready to set sail now with her lucky new owners.

A WORD FROM THE OWNER:

'I am a Swiss from Zug expat who migrated to South Africa in 1967 with the idea of one day starting my own business but I wanted to know the country better and its people. For the first 4 years I ran an engine rebuilding company in Port Elizabeth then in 1973 I opened my Marine Engineering shop.

In February  1978 I purchased Jean Marie a MIKADO 17m in Beaulieu sur mer in France.

The boat was just over a year old and had never sailed. She was just used under motor and the sails where still packed, never opened.

I kept Jean Marie for 7 years in France and during the European summer I explored Corsica – Sardinia and Italy .

In May 1985 I sailed her to South Africa via Brazil. During this trip I came to understand the boat very well and was so impressed that I decided that she was the boat  which would take me around the world.  I

In 1988 I decided to protect the under water of the hull against possible development of osmosis. We applied an Epoxy ( Araldite system Ciba Geigy ) barrier cote.

In 2002 – 2003 the complete interior was replaced as well as the lay out making it open plan to create a bigger space throughout.

In 2007 the teak deck was replaced with 14 mm thick teak planks and applied with the Sika system.

During 2010 – 2011 I contracted Brian Higgins from Yacht repair Management in Chaguaramas Trinidad to apply a west system underwater treatment . This began with peeling the old layers of antifoul and gel coat, then applying three layers of 12 oz. Biax XM 1208 cloth with West  105 resin and 209  slow hardener , finishing off with 6 top coats  of slicking and two coats of Jotun Penguard high built epoxy giving the boat a 4mm epoxy laminate.

We started to replace the rigging in 2011 by doing the forward  and aft lower and cap shrouds as well as chain plates. In 2017 the backstays – inner forestay and the triatic were replaced. 2019 the head stay was replaced.

2014 a complete overhaul of the Renault Marine Couach DS 140 HP with the 3 heat exchanger where replaced in 2019.'
